Hijau is an independent organization concerning with environmental awareness and education. Hijau was founded in 1999, having seen the declined condition of environment in Jogjakarta, lack of information on environmental discourses. Hijau developed itself into an institution that encouraged the growth of environmental education in Jogjakarta, spoke for environmental issues, opened public discourses on environment through attention-grabbing learning activities.
